The Trail!

While this section is not formally part of the Ngā Haerenga Great Rides network, it has been recognised by New Zealand Cycle Trails (NZCT) as a Heartland Ride, providing a link between the Waikato River Trails and Rotorua. From Ohakuri Road, riders can continue by road towards Waikite Valley Hot Springs and then onto Rotorua, making Atiamuri a useful connection point for those looking to extend their journey beyond the Waikato River Trails.

The trail begins on Ohakuri Road, where it is clearly signposted before heading approximately 1 kilometre downhill through forest along a wide, well-formed road. From here, the route connects with the lakeside trail and follows the shoreline of Lake Atiamuri for another 4 kilometres, with the journey eventually linking into the Waikato River Trail at Atiamuri Village.

Graded Grade 2, this is a mostly flat and accessible section, making it a great option for families, recreational riders and walkers looking to enjoy the scenery without tackling a demanding ride. The trail’s wide surface provides plenty of room to take in the surroundings, while the elevated sections offer some epic views stretching down Lake Atiamuri and across the surrounding forested landscape.

One of the real highlights of this section is the extensive restoration work taking place alongside the trail. More than 20,000 native trees have been planted, helping to restore the landscape and create an increasingly rich habitat for native wildlife. As the plantings mature, the trail is becoming an even more attractive place to experience the sights and sounds of regenerating native bush.

The final approach to Atiamuri Village adds another layer to the experience. Around 500 metres from the village, riders and walkers can stop at a picnic area and take a break while exploring a series of historic interpretation panels. These panels tell the story of the development of the Atiamuri Dam and Power Station, providing an insight into the engineering and hydro-electric development that has played such an important role in shaping the Waikato River and the surrounding community.

The Atiamuri section is therefore more than just an easy lakeside ride. It brings together scenic Lake Atiamuri, regenerating native forest, family-friendly trail riding and the fascinating history of Waikato hydro-electric power. With its combination of wide trail, gentle gradients and memorable views, it is a rewarding way to arrive in Atiamuri Village and connect with the wider Waikato River Trails network.
